India’s first bidirectional pipeline, PIL, is owned by India Infrastructure Trust and sponsored by Brookfield Asset Management. With 48-inch diameter pipelines spread across 1480 km, they provide clean and green energy from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh to East Bharuch in Gujarat in the West. In India, PIL has traversed the pipeline of five significant states: Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. PIL has ten compressor stations with a total installed power of 900+ MW. PIL has been awarded various national and international accreditations for its safety record and operational efficiency.

CHALLENGES

Challenges Faced by Pipeline Infrastructure Limited

Data Consolidation

Every month around 15 different surveys were carried out for Cathodic Protection, ROU, Surveillance, Corrosion monitoring etc. for 10 pipeline sections. This data was collected from sites in excel & paper format and sent to the headquarters Integrity teams. Consolidating, validating and analyzing this vast amount of data to identify issues was a huge task requiring weeks of effort from multiple integrity engineers.

Inflexible Legacy software

Legacy software like ROAIMS did not have the capability to adapt to the changing business requirements, uploading ILI and other data into the softwares was cumbersome and time consuming. Performing Back to Back ILI analysis was a semi-automated process requiring months for a 1480 KM pipeline. In addition to this legacy PIMS software was expensive requiring upfront capex investment.

Data Consolidation

PIL has multiple different systems for Integrity, GIS, Emergency response & ROU Management. There was a lack of a single platform which could integrate with all data sources like Scada, Drone Surveillance etc.
Managing and maintaining these systems was difficult. Keeping these different systems up to date and supporting them has huge IT overheads and costs.
